If you are involved in a disaster of any type, the three things that most people think of after being rescued are food, water, and shelter. You may have a stock of food and water with you, and if you are on a fishing trip, you probably have somewhere to stay.

But have you thought about what happens when your food supply begins to run low? Replenishing your supply can help you survive long-term situations. In this post, we will discuss how to find fish in order to survive lengthy disasters.

Remember, survival fishing is all about surviving. Use any methods you can at your disposal in order to obtain fish for you and your group to eat. There are some forms of fishing that are illegal, and we do not promote them, but when in a survival situation, you need to do what is best for you to survive.

Take Tips From the Pros

You may consider yourself a decent fisherman. But there is still room for improvement in the way you fish. You can still take tips from pros that really know what they are doing. After all, these guys do this for a living, so their skill level is most likely much higher than yours. Here are the top tips pros have given:

  • When casting, on every single cast, place your lure next to a piece of cover ,such as rocks, trees, logs, or bushes. Even if there is a piece of trash in the water, it can be used as a cover. Or look for change. This could be droplets of water, watercolor change, or the drop off in depth. Fish love both cover and change, so this is a great way to find these fish. You can also try to put your lure where other fishers are not placing them.
  • If you want to become a better fisherman, use worms. Soft, plastic worms are perfect for those that are just starting to fish. Pay attention to how both the rod and reel feel when you bump against different structures.
  • In the spring, fish along areas of cover, such as the shoreline. The fish will be hungry during this season, and are becoming more active as they are laying eggs. Rainy days or cloudy days are excellent times to fish in the spring.
  • In the summer, move to waters that are deeper as they are cooler. Early mornings or late nights are the best times to fish in the summer.
    5. Head back to the shoreline in the fall, as the fish will be most active here. Fish will most likely be feeding aggressively here getting ready for winter.

Seasonal Changes and Fish Behavior

Take a tip from those that fish all year round. The weather patterns can have a tremendous effect on how anyone fishes. Cold weather can make fish tired. This means the fisherman will have to try different ways to fish.

You may have to use smaller bait when the seasons change in order to see the fish strike. Bass tend to eat less when the weather is colder, but if you have bait that they are interested in, they will bite.

Skenos are wonderful when trying to bass fish as well. Using Skenos are almost a foul proof way to get a bite. You may have to work it a tad bit, but never over-work it. Eventually, a fish will bite.

Research Fishing Techniques

Researching fishing techniques is a good idea to see how professional fisherman find fish. One technique you may be interested in using is a jig for bigger fish. You will need to cast accurately, but if you know how to do this, it is well worth it.

If you have not used buzzbaits, consider looking into these. This will allow you to catch bigger fish, which in long-term survival situations, that is crucial to having more to eat. In order to use this method, you will want to go as slow as possible in order to catch the biggest catch you can.

Look to the deeper waters to find the biggest bass. Once again, the bigger the fish, the more you have to eat.

You may also need to look into hand fishing when finding means of long-term survival. Hand fishing has various other names, such as noodling, fish tickling, hogging, gurgling, or cat fisting. This primitive way of fishing should be done with a pair of gloves.

Use All Your Resources

It is extremely important to use all of your resources in order to become the best fisherman. Watching videos can easily show you to catch fish using various techniques. You can also read articles or books. Watch fishing tournaments to watch fishermen and the techniques they use.

You can also research rivers and see where the best places are to catch fish, crawdads, and frogs.

Another means of resources is what is all around you. If you are stranded, you may not have hooks. Improvise and use other things, such as paper clips, nails, safety clips, thorns, or needles. Lures can be made from pieces of cloth or feathers. Getting creative will pay off here when coming up with finding various materials to use as fishing equipment.

Passive Survival Fishing Techniques

When in a long-term survival situation, it is important for you to do anything to survive. Looking into passive fishing techniques to survive or building traps can lend amazing results.

You can set up a trotline to get a lot of fish. A trotline is a long piece of rope that has smaller pieces of rope that are attached in knots with hooks. Each hook is baited to catch whatever type of fish you are trying to catch. In this technique, you do not need to watch your line at all times. The trotline can completely cover the entire width of a stream or river. It can be set up in the night and left until morning if desired. If you check them every few hours, you can rebait hooks so you are able to catch more fish to replenish your supply.

Trotlines are great for catching catfish, but are also useful for crabs and turtles.

Trotlines also need lots of bait. You can easily make a fishing trap. Plastic bottles can be used in order to catch bait fish. Maggots, grubs, and nightcrawlers all make excellent bait. Ants, magpies, centipedes, bees, beetles, crawdads, mayflies, and aquatic snails are all forms of bait that you can look for in the wild as well. Live minnows and leeches can be used as bait in a long-term survival situation. You may also want to to keep a small section of the fish you catch to use as bait, since some fish eat smaller fish for bait.
